Pecha Kucha (pronounced Pe cha cha ) is a Japanese term literally translated as chatter or chit chat. It is a contemporary platform for established and emerging artists, including hidden an unexpected talents in the community to showcase their work.
“It’s mostly about getting the community together and creating conversation,” said Linda Dade, who was so inspired at her first Pecha Kucha night in Indonesia, she decided to kick one off in Forster.
Originating in Tokyo in 2003 the popularity of this event has soared and is now happening in 700 cities world-wide. The format of the presentations must comply strictly with the code set out by the original architects with presenters talking for 20 seconds about 20 slides of their work. The night gallops a pace and audiences are thrilled by the moving work of a diversity of artists.
“The real benefits of Pecha Kucha nights however, are the ‘beer breaks’ when the mesmerising artworks fuel conversation and engagement between artist and art lovers,” Linda says.
Linda and partner Mark have been locals to the Great Lakes area for 10 years now. They have a successful Chiropractor business but enthusiastically immerse themselves in producing PechaKucha nights as a means to fulfil the need for cultural stimulation that locals crave. Linda seeks out the artists, they submit their work, then Mark uploads the designs to a power point presentation. Linda is quick to point out that the logistics of this can be tricky at times but the flow on effect to local business and tourism is enormous.
